Vaisakhi 1699 - Amrit Sanchaar

Architecture is important to preserving history, when historic spaces become increasingly alike through marble and modern restoration, their individual character and spatial memory can be lost. I want to explore preserving history through the people, landscapes, atmosphere and stories that made these places meaningful.

I imagine Guru Gobind Singh Ji travelling through Anandpur Sahib as part of the sunlight of Chardi Kala. By the sarovar, two women sit quietly with a child in meditation, not seeking front-line glory, representing a devotional life, quietly inspiring others through daily life.

The changing sun marks night and day, while colour follows the Panj Pyare. Guru Granth Sahib Ji is emphasised in juxtaposition with the sun. Guru Gobind Singh Ji and Mata Sahib Kaur Ji are humbly depicted within this story of love and devotion, preparing the world for Amrit.

This is history not as a frozen monument, but as something living, held in people, place, light, colour, memory and faith.
